I passed peeps. Day 2 of 2 on IVR course (safety and competence doing breakdowns roadside) done and dusted.

I’m not saying it was hard or easy, but I did learn a few things, also realised how dangerous it can actually be doing a breakdown on the side of the motorway, when your out there keeping the trucks on the road and customers happy by keeping their wheels turning, you don’t really realise how much can actually go wrong.

It’s kind of scary when you think, all it takes is a truck to wander into the hard shoulder, and BOOM it’s game over.

It’s also not only your safety your risking, its other road users and the driver too, as from that point of you pulling up flashing them beacons, yoir the one who takes complete control. Everyone around you is under your influence and your command, and most of all your responsibility.

Whether it is just you and the driver, or you and the driver and his pasanger, as soon as you turn up it is your responsibility to make sure everyone is safe, and your responsibility that other road users can see you and your van and the vehicle your working on.

It’s down to you to make the right decisions, and fast. Also you need to keep assessing the situation, the longer you are there the longer people are at risk. It’s your responsibility to minimise that risk as much as possible, the risk will never disappear, but you have control to lower that risk.

Yes it makes your job harder, but you chose to do this job. That being said, it is such a good feeling when you have fixed that truck that isn’t working anymore. When them wheels start turning again the feeling of pride enters your body, and it feels amazing.

It’s not just an achievement, it’s a feeling of pride. What people don’t realise is you have possibly potentially saved their life, you have kept a hazard from affecting too many people, you have got that vehicle moving again so the traffic doesn’t build up, therefore you have helped 100s or 1000s of people get home to their families safe and sound, and on time or not too late. You have also saved the affected company from loosing too much down time, which in effect helps them save or make more money.

Also you have earned more money for your company, (which my next blog will help you understand what it’s like to be the top man, it’s not all holidays and profits trust me)

So yeah it feels awesome to have another course notched into my belt, hopefully now things are starting to get back to normal, there will be more opportunities for more.
