THE SANTABLOG SERIES, DAY 21 (Share a Plate: Spreading Christmas Cheer)

THE SANTABLOG SERIES

DAY 21

Spare a plate for someone this Christmas. Seriously, it’s pretty easy to do.

Everyone loves a good Christmas dinner, right? I don’t care who you are. We all overindulge over the Christmas period. We all have spare food or buy too much. We end up throwing some out. Maybe not as much as we used to, you know, back when things were cheaper and more affordable. Even so, we still buy too much and throw away more than we should.

I’m guilty of that myself. I know you are too, even if it is just a little bit thrown away.

Christmas is our guilt-free festive period, what happens at Christmas stays at Christmas per se. All diets go out the window, we can afford to put weight on and the New Year resolution can be to lose it again (ok I’ll brag, I don’t need that New Year resolution because I struggle to put weight on), am I right?

This year you can make a difference, this year you can share a plate or plates for someone less fortunate. First, post on social media or internet forums. Find any of the many forums, groups, or pages. Let them know you have some extra or spare food. You can even say you can deliver or collection. Many people out there are struggling more than you this year. Unfortunately, their struggles will worsen next year. It doesn’t matter if you live here in the UK or any other country in the world, everyone has Facebook or Instagram or X (formally known as Twitter, I personally still call it Twitter, I don’t care if an overly rich dick wants to change its name) no one really has an excuse not to do so.

There are even many food banks out there too, you can find your nearest one on the internet or any social network. It will not cost you anything apart from a walk or a short drive, will it?

You could go a step further. Get a little extra food in. Cook a little more and offer it. If you can afford it, why not? I mean most places, like Aldi or Lidl, are offering veggies for 19p, 19 freaking pennies. Not exactly breaking the bank now is it?

If you’re one of these stuck-up asswipes that won’t shop in the likes of Lidl or Aldi, even the other leading supermarkets are doing veggies cheaper. Yes, many people out there do look down on these cheaper budget shops and their shoppers, but then again those kinds of people wouldn’t be reading my blogs so there we go, they also wouldn’t be thinking of feeding strangers or care about wasting food.

It’s affordable to feed an extra few mouths if you do it right, it doesn’t have to be something big or flashy, just a little something will create some happy people who would otherwise worry about feeding themselves or their family and kids.

You also have to be careful to make sure the recipients aren’t allergic to any ingredients. That being said, anyone with allergies should let you know before they take the food.

I have had an experience with this. There was once a homeless person up town where I used to live, I saw him a few times and gave him a couple of quid now and then, when I could afford to do so. One time this person looked very worse for wear and I spoke to him and he said he needed food but kept apologising. I got him a Burgerking meal and he refused, when I finally understood him he said he was diabetic. All this time he was apologising for wasting my time and money, not having dealt with someone with diabetes before I called an ambulance for the person and ended up having to eat the burgerking myself. I only ever saw that person once after this, they said thank for helping them. We had a long conversation about how he got there and he told me he was in the army and came back with PTSD. His wife left him because of his severe nightmares, he couldn’t keep a job and eventually lost his house and home. It was sad and upsetting. This person humbled me even further, you never know someones full story.

It felt good to help. Helping others isn’t limited to helping them, it also helps you understand who you are and the kind of person you want to be.

Helping someone less fortunate also allows you to feel some goodness, but also helps others see there are kind and nice people in the world. it may sound silly but you’re kindness can affect others in such a way you may help them realise life is still good and worth living. It’s a tough world these days and we all need help, some people don’t like to admit it but it’s true.

Share a plate today, share a plate for Christmas.
